  • Stevenage FCW v AFC Sudbury Women | Match Report

Stevenage lose out to visitors Sudbury in first fixture of the New Year Back Match Report Stevenage FCW v AFC Sudbury Women Stevenage lose out to visitors Sudbury in first fixture of the New Year Edward Payne 9 January 2023 By Edward Payne Goals from Kelsey Millen and Emily Schofield were not enough for Stevenage FCW this weekend as AFC Sudbury avenged their narrow defeat in the reverse fixture last August. The weather may have been a foreshadow of events to come as the ladies came out to a deluge of rain. However despite the dark and gloomy weather, Stevenage provided a bright start. Amy Makewell broke free into the left side of the box and rolled a tasty ball across goal for Millen to slot home at the far post. Jodie Bellinger, Vicky Neal and Millen all saw chances come and go whilst Celine Ray kept the impressive Holly Kennard at bay down the other end. Boro’ would come to regret those missed chances. After a superb piece of defensive covering from Neal in the early stages of the second half, Sudbury had to settle for a corner. Sophie Jeffery sent that in and Kaylee Dodd rose at the far post to level the scores. Neal saw a volley from a Hannah Nebbitt corner saved before another Jeffery corner was awarded. This time the ball cleared most players, but Jess Allen was at the far post to take the ball and strike it home. Just after the hour mark, Becky Shephard hit the bar from a floated effort from the right side of the pitch and Millen sent the ball just wide once it was worked back to her. Sudbury took advantage of the let off and when Kennard had the ball on the left flank she attempted to cut inside only for the ball to land at the feet of Leonie Bezant who shifted the ball and fired the ball high over Ray for the third of the game. That was the end of the game for Ray who was hurt and with no substitute goalkeeper, Webster needed to fill in. Stevenage fought hard and narrowed the deficit with a superb bit of work from Makewell who again teed up the goalscorer – this time Schofield – by sending the ball to the far post for her to fire home. Any dreams of a comeback were dashed with just under ten minutes remaining. Boro’ failed to deal with a ball sent to the left and Kennard topped off her performance with a lofted effort that Wesbter had no chance of saving. Susan Uwaifo and Schofield both had late opportunities to get Stevenage back in the game, but Sudbury held on for a win that will be hard for the Stevenage players to swallow with Luton only able to draw at King’s Lynn. Stevenage XI: Ray, Re, Webster (c), Neal, Nebbitt, Swarres, Bodily, Shephard, Millen, Makewell, Bellinger Subs: Schofield, Farmer, Uwaifo, Greenwood Goals: Millen, Schofield Sudbury XI: Weller, Provan, Egan, Bezant, McHale, Harrison (c), Kennard, Newley, Jeffery, Allen, Dodd Subs: Creaton, Smith, Edwards, Donley, Lambe Goals: Dodd, Allen, Bazant, Kennard

  • Emily Ramsey

Get to know every member of the current Lionesses squad. Lionesses Squad Emily Ramsey Goalkeeper Emily Ramsey has been capped in many of the international youth levels and most recently captained the U23 side. Ramsey was first called-up to the senior squad in 2021 as a replacement for Karen Bardsley, but this camp serves as her first in which she has been named from the outset. Under parent club Manchester United, Ramsey has served a number of loan spells and is currently gaining minutes with Everton. At 5’11 Ramsey is a commanding figure at the back who uses her height to advantageously cover the goal mouth and impose on advancing opponents. Ramsey is an excellent outright shot-stopper with a rising domestic clean sheet record. The youngster is also becoming more proficient in playing out from the back when under pressure, although she still does boast a mighty launch kick. Photograph courtesy of the FA.

Reading boss, Kelly Chambers speaks to the media ahead of her side’s FA Cup quarter-final clash with Chelsea on Sunday. Back Kelly Chambers reiterates that “anything is possible’ ahead of Reading's FA Cup quarter final tie Reading boss, Kelly Chambers speaks to the media ahead of her side’s FA Cup quarter-final clash with Chelsea on Sunday. Getty 16 March 2023 By Rosa Maitland Kelly Chambers confirmed that she has no new injury concerns heading into the match up with Chelsea: “No nothing new, we have a full squad. Everyone that was available for Arsenal is available. Hopefully we should have Deanna Cooper back in the next week or two which will be nice.” Chambers confirmed that Deanne Rose’s ACL recovery is going well: “She's actually going really well. We're hoping that she's going to be back for just towards the end of the season, which is a lot earlier than we thought. Progress is going really well, so if everything maintains that we're way we're hoping that she could be fit for then and then hopefully fit for Canada and the World Cup which is obviously a big priority of her. It's just nice to see her out there.” When asked if she relishes coming up against one of the biggest teams in the country Chambers replied: “Yeah, that’s what the FA Cup is about, it’s about playing against top teams and with the exception of last week [4-0 loss to Arsenal] we like to raise our game against them [the best teams in the country]. We have obviously had a strong analysis of the Arsenal game, it was a game we were very disappointed in, in terms of performance. So that’s definitely something to put right for this weekend. We want to show a bit more aggression and a bit more of us. We’ll be going into that with a positive mindset and making sure that we put stuff right that we weren’t happy with on the weekend.” Chambers was asked if it’s a case of focusing on her sides strengths as opposed to Chelsea’s threats when creating a game plan, in which she replied: “Yeah, definitely. I think the one thing we weren't happy with at the weekend was just our identity, we didn't show that against Arsenal. We're normally quite aggressive defensively, we like to be front footed, and we didn't show any of that the weekend. "So, it's just about us getting back into the mode of us and really thinking about what we what we want to get out of the game. We don't hide from the fact that Chelsea do have a lot of threats and a lot of quality. But I think Chelsea has always been a team that we've always had a good game against them.” On whether her relationship with Emma Hayes makes playing Chelsea more of a special occasion Chambers said: “When the whistle blows we're very much in in competitive mode, and we'll have our own stuff on the pitch. I think it's actually quite nice that it will be Mother's Day. We will both be there as two mums in the league which is nice. She’s helped me in many different ways and vice versa. "It's nice to have those types of people to lean on, not just for football, but for people that are in the same shoes as you that live in the same life. In terms of everyone knows how intense it can be, whether it's them trying to win the league, or us to try and stay up. And obviously, the whistle goes at the start of the game, and it becomes competitive. But literally, as soon as that's over, it's back to normal.” News

  • "We will be 100% ready" says Aston Villa boss | On Her Side

Carla Ward insists her side are ready for their tough fixture against West Ham this afternoon Back "We will be 100% ready" says Aston Villa boss Carla Ward insists her side are ready for their tough fixture against West Ham this afternoon Getty 11 March 2023 By Paul Donegan Carla Ward spoke to the media on Friday morning ahead of Aston Villa’s trip to West Ham United in the Women’s Super League on Sunday. Ward started by confirming that everyone is fit and available for the match apart from the long-term injured. With snow in some parts of the country (including Birmingham), Ward was asked about how difficult it has been to prepare for the match. Her response was “you have to find another way” and “they have had some really good meetings with the players this morning”. Ward added that at this point in the season “fitness and the way in which we set up shouldn’t be an issue, no excuses, we will be 100% ready.” Unbeaten in the WSL in 2023, Ward was asked about confidence at the club. Ward replied by saying it is about “keeping feet on the ground, making sure we continue to move forward, raise standards and improve all the time”. She added the players are playing tremendously well and a joy to work with and watch. “They don’t discuss a top four finish and that is a stretch” Ward continued. She also mentioned that they take one game at a time and that a top six finish “would look like success”. “It is about telling the players we want more and important we keep going” were the Villa managers final thoughts on this. Asked about how the team learn from experiences and build going forward, Ward commented that they are progressing naturally as a group of players and as a club. “We are in a good place” Ward added. Villa played West Ham two weeks in the FA Cup and won on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Ward noted that the games between them this season have been “competitive and lively”. She continued by saying that if Villa turn up and do things properly then we have every chance of winning the game. Ward was asked about if they have plans to defend against Dagný Brynjarsdóttir who has been on good form for West Ham this season. She praised Brynjarsdóttir saying she is a great player and will make any team in this division better, but you need plans to defend against them as a team. In the league fixture at the Poundland Bescot Stadium between the two sides earlier in the season, West Ham’s Hawa Cissoko and two of their coaching staff were sent off late on. Ward was asked about if they would focus on themselves and controlling passion in the return fixture. Her response was that we will concentrate on what we are doing and not buy into some of the antics in some of the games. Ward said consistency in the league is “huge” and the win last week against Everton “was probably the most pleasing of the season”. The Villa manager was happy with how they controlled that game without the ball, how disciplined they were, and how they adapted to changes throughout the match. Aston Villa still have to play Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal, and Ward was asked if they could still have a say in who wins the title as matches against the Villans aren’t seen as a guaranteed win anymore. “I like to think we can still play a part, and we will be doing everything we can to win every match possible” replied the Villa manager. Ward said “it is fantastic” that the final games of the WSL season has been brought forward a day (now Saturday 27th May, 3pm (BST) kick-offs) to avoid a clash with the last day of the Premier League, and “ it is a good opportunity for women’s football to have its own day” Ward concluded. West Ham United face Aston Villa at the Chigwell Construction Stadium on Sunday at 3pm (GMT) and it is live on the FA Player. News
